In 2006, the Glenbow Museum
in Calgary Alberta, asked me to create "digital portraits" of the 48 individuals featured in Aritha van
Herk’s book "Mavericks: An Incorrigible History of Alberta". The digital portraits became an integral part
of this dynamic permanent exhibit which opened to rave reviews in 2007.
Above: In the centre of the "ranching" area of the Mavericks exhibit, stands a sculpture of a horse, made entirely of barbed wire atop a steel armature. This impressive piece was crafted by artist Jeff DeBoer. The walls were painted by a local artist (seen standing to the right of Jeff). His depictions of ranching life are full of character and charm. (Photo courtesy Rob Ward, former Creative Director at Parks Canada.)
The 48 digital portraits were created by digitally adding light, color and texture to the original black and white photographs. The photo above provides a sense of their final size. Check out the Glenbow Museum and the exhibit's companion website for more information on all of these remarkable characters and the roles they played in shaping Alberta.(also available in French)
